Worrincy looking forward to 2021

14/12/2020

After a tough year in 2020, Sheffield Eagles winger Rob Worrincy is now looking forward to the 2021 campaign with pre-season underway.

Worrincy admitted that the cancellation of the 2020 season was disheartening for the club.

“It was disappointing, we’d done all the hard work, all of pre-season and got a few games under our belt,” he said.

“We were getting into gear, getting into motion and we were ready for the season and it was withdrawn without much notice.

“It was a big disappointment for a lot of the boys”

The 35-year-old praised the club for their efforts to keep morale high during the national lockdown.

“WhatsApp groups were going off left, right and centre but it was difficult and people tried to stay motivated,” Worrincy added.

“We were sent programmes to prop up our fitness in the hope of coming back at some point and it never really got going.

“It was tough but as an athlete, these are things you've got to do so we can play at the top of our game”

Worrincy shared his delight at being back in training as preparations for the 2021 season begin.

“It's been great to be back,” he said.

“It’s been a difficult year and some people take for granted the camaraderie, the team ethos, being around the other lads and bouncing off each other.

“It’s been good to return to that environment together and it’s nice to have people alongside who can get you through a session by giving you some motivation.

“I've always said that when you’re training with each other in a gym environment or on the field you’re always going to get an extra five per cent.

“When you think that you’ve had enough, that person might give you some motivation or a pat on the back, which helps to give you that extra bit out, it’s good to be back in.

With the early part of pre-season having now begun, Worrincy has expressed how important pre-season will be for the Eagles.

“Pre-season is going to be essential,” he said.

“It gives us an opportunity to continue the bonds that we made last year and it gives us an opportunity to learn more about the way Tubby wants us to play, especially for players who haven’t been at the club before.

“It’s going to be key for getting our bodies ready for the upcoming season, by the time we get back to playing some of us won’t have played a game for 18 months.

“It’s a physical game and there’s a lot of collisions, there’s a lot of trauma on the body so it’s going to be important that we prepare our bodies for that so it’s not too much of a shock to the system.

“We’ve been in lockdown for six months plus now and in that time there’s been no contact, no field session, so the pre-season is going to be very very key in terms of how we go forward into next year.”
