Wheelchair Squads named for this weekend's fixtures

29/02/2024

Sheffield Eagles welcome North Wales Crusaders to the steel city on Sunday 3rd March for a double-header of Wheelchair Rugby League action.

The 2023 Championship Champions will travel with two teams, with the respective first teams meeting at 11.45am followed by an “A” team clash at 1.45pm.

Both games will take place at All Saints Sports Centre, a new venue for the Eagles, and will act as a pre-season friendly for both teams who will get their competitive seasons underway in April.

The Eagles have named two teams without overlap for the two fixtures, which will see several players make their home debut.

In the first team, Barry Grayson and James Birchnall will play their first games in the city, whilst Stephen Reilly returns to the side after missing the away fixture at Hull Kingston Rovers in January.

For the A team, Helen Calder and Ben Wilson will play in front of a home crowd for the first time, with Jenny Pearson returning to action after a period of illness.

“I’m pleased that we have both teams in action this weekend” noted Wheelchair Head Coach Greg Brown.

“Crusaders are  a strong club with lots of depth and international experience which will give both sides a really good opportunity and we’ll have 19 players getting some valuable game time ahead of the regular season.

"Since we played Crusaders in our first competitive game as a club, we’ve improved each time with the winning margin reducing and whilst we’re still in the hunt for that first win over them, they know they’ll be in for a stern test when they face us in Sheffield.”

Both games will be watched by several new recruits who joined the club over the winter who are going through the registration process. Entry is free to all.
