Sheffield Eagles made it four league victories in a row in the Betfred Championship this afternoon with a convincing 38-12 victory over Workington Town at the MEPS International Home of Football Stadium.
Returning to Dronfield for the first of three consecutive home fixtures, Craig Lingard's side were looking to continue their recent resurgence after last week's dramatic last-gasp victory over Salford.
The Eagles boss welcomed back Conor Fitzsimmons to the starting line-up for his first appearance since March, while Harry Bowes moved into the hooker role in the absence of Corey Johnson.
Sheffield were looking to make a fast start in front of the home supporters, but it was the visitors who struck first. With just nine minutes on the clock, Jamie Doran crossed for Workington to give the Cumbrian side an early lead.
Despite the setback, the Eagles responded in perfect fashion and were back on level terms only minutes later. George Griffin crashed over from close range to score the first of Sheffield's seven tries of the afternoon.
Billy Walkley then won a penalty deep inside the Workington half, and the Eagles made the pressure count. From close range, Alex Foster powered over beneath the posts to extend Sheffield's advantage, with Kai Morgan adding the extras to make it 12-6 at the break.
The Eagles couldn't have asked for a better start to the second half. Just two minutes after the restart, Morgan burst over to score Sheffield's third try of the afternoon and give the hosts further breathing space.
Sheffield continued to dominate possession and territory throughout the second period, and their pressure paid off once again on the hour mark. Griffin powered over for his second try of the afternoon from close range, extending the Eagles' lead to 22-6.
Workington did manage to hit back with 15 minutes remaining as Callum Phillips crossed for the visitors, but any hopes of a late comeback were quickly extinguished by a ruthless finish from the home side.
The Eagles turned on the style during the closing stages, running in three tries in the final six minutes to complete an emphatic victory. Kieran Gill crossed out wide for his ninth try of the season before Griffin completed an outstanding hat-trick with his third score of the afternoon. There was still time for Morgan to grab his second try of the match in the dying seconds, crashing over to round off a dominant afternoon for Sheffield.
The 38-12 victory extends the Eagles' winning run to four consecutive Betfred Championship matches as Lingard's side continue to build momentum heading into the final stages of the season.
Sheffield will now look to make it five league wins in a row next Sunday when they welcome Rochdale Hornets to the MEPS International Home of Football Stadium for Round 21 of the Betfred Championship, with kick-off at 3pm.
