Match Report | Sheffield Eagles 12-24 Widnes Vikings
03/08/2025
Sheffield Eagles were defeated 12-24 by Widnes Vikings in Round 20 of the Betfred Championship this afternoon at the Steel City Stadium.
The Eagles welcomed Matty Dawson-Jones, Cory Aston and Evan Hodgson back into the starting lineup, while Blake Broadbent made his 150th career appearance.
Following an end-to-end opening ten minutes in South Yorkshire, Dawson-Jones found space on the right edge following quick Eagles play through the hands, giving the hosts an early four point lead.
However, the Vikings managed to claw their way back into the game as Luke Thomas capitalised on an Eagles error following a kick through to put the visitors ahead going into half time.
The Eagles were awarded a penalty in front of the sticks nine minutes after the restart, in which Aston converted to bring the game level, but it was the visitors who took hold of proceedings in the remaining half-an-hour.
The away side restored their lead shortly later as Ben Condon was first to a high kick, finishing to the right of the sticks to put them 6-12 ahead.
The Vikings extended their lead further through Will Roberts shortly after, who pounced on a high kick to score, before converting his third goal of the afternoon.
Sheffield found a way back into the game as Evan Hodgson reacted quickly to a free ball and finished to the left of the sticks, but the Vikings had the last say in the game as Condon scored his second try of the afternoon moments before the hooter sounded to help wrap up a 12-24 victory for the North West side.
Sheffield Eagles are back in action when they travel to Bartercard Odsal Stadium next weekend to take on Halifax Panthers (3pm KO).
