Sheffield Eagles suffered a tough 48-4 loss away at London Broncos this evening in the Betfred Championship.

Looking to bounce back from their defeat to local rivals Doncaster last week, head coach Craig Lingard named a changed team which featured new loan signing Jimmy Beckett, and Lewis Peachey, who returned from injury to make the bench.

Clearly the underdogs, the Eagles were in for a tough outing against the Broncos, who had started the season with a perfect seven wins in seven games, a run the Eagles faced the tough task of ending.

The Eagles got proceedings underway, but it didn’t stay 0-0 for long. Fory-seven seconds in, London ran the ball straight through the middle of the Eagles defence to get them off to the perfect start.

One try became two almost immediately as the Broncos broke through multiple Eagles tackles out wide, before they shipped it into the middle for Morea Morea to score London’s second within five minutes.

The next ten minutes were much more even; the Eagles enjoyed their first spell of possession which saw Alex Foster go just short of the line. It didn’t last for long however, as more slick hands from the Broncos slipped Liam Tindall through a gap to extend the lead.

After half an hour, the ball had barely left the Broncos hands, the Eagles facing wave after wave of attacks. Some solid defence from Sheffield couldn’t keep London out for long however, and Epel Kapinias scored his first of the game.

Just before half time, the constant defending from Sheffield clearly took its toll. Another break from the Broncos was stopped short of the line, but it wasn’t enough as the Eagles’ defence fell asleep and Brandon Webster-Mannsfield walked it over from less than five meters out.

The second half started much like the first, with London scoring within a minute of the restart. Hard running lines down the middle drew the Eagles defence in which allowed Morea to score his second of the game out wide. This was compounded by another try for Kapinias, scoring out wide to extend the hosts’ lead.

Unlike the first half, after the two early tries, the Eagles managed to gain a bit of a foothold in the game. Playing much more of the game in the Broncos’ half, some brilliant handling out wide finally broke down London’s defence, and Billy Walkley finished acrobatically in the corner to give the Eagles their first try in the game.

It didn’t take long for the Broncos to respond, some hard lines and successful kick chases saw them storm up the pitch, before Giaro Voro displayed some quick feet to evade tackles and score another under the posts.

Going into the last ten minutes, the game was beginning to take its toll on the Eagles. Injuries throughout the game and constant defending resulted in some tired legs on the pitch. This didn’t stop them from attacking however, as Kieran Gill punched through the middle of the Broncos defense to march the Eagles up the pitch.

To round off the game, the Broncos chose to kick for the posts in the dying moments, as Voro added the two points and brought the game to a close.

Another tough outing, the Eagles battled to a heavy 48-4 defeat to the league leaders. Billy Walkley scored a consolation try, but it wasn’t enough against a ruthless London Broncos side.

The Eagles’ next game is away at the Rochdale Hornets in the first round of the 1895 cup where they will be looking to bounce back from a difficult result.
