Haven capitalise on Eagles second half slump
06/08/2023
Sheffield Eagles’ top three hopes were put in doubt after a 32-20 loss to Whitehaven at the LEL Arena.
It’s another game where the Eagles had a lead but surrendered it to the opposition later in the day.
The visitors went 0-14 up courtesy of tries from Anthony Thackeray, Jack Hansen and Quentin Laulu-Togaga’e - with Cory Aston going 1/3 from the tee.
Whitehaven responded with two tries of their own before the interval through Curtis Teare and Josh Rourke.
Half-time - Whitehaven 12-14 Sheffield Eagles
Five minutes into the second half. Whitehaven took the lead for the first time in the game as Dion Aiye created an overlap on the right flank which Dave Eccleston capitalised on.
Oscar Doran and Daniel Spencer-Tonks crossed the whitewash to put Whitehaven 12 points clear before Sheffield could finally get on the board in the second period.
Bayley Liu ran a great line to go over the try-line untouched, with Aston converting to reduce the arrears to six points.
However, the Cumbrians weren’t to be denied from completing the double over Sheffield. Seven minutes remained when the killer score came from makeshift half-back Ryan King.
