Eagles Foundation host Iftar event this Saturday
18/02/2026
Sheffield Eagles and the Eagles Foundation are delighted to announce our third annual Iftar event, which will take place at this Saturday’s Betfred Championship fixture against Barrow Raiders, to celebrate the holy month of Ramadan and the rich diversity of the city of Sheffield.
Ramadan marks the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and commemorates the revelation of the Qur’an to the Prophet Muhammad. It is a sacred period of spiritual reflection, prayer, and community for Muslims around the world. During Ramadan, Muslims fast during daylight hours, with Iftar being the meal taken at sunset to break the fast.
On Saturday, the Eagles Foundation will welcome more than 90 attendees from community partners and local schools who have engaged with the club’s charitable programmes in recent months.
The Eagles were the first UK rugby league club to host an Iftar event at a matchday fixture in 2024, and we have proudly continued on the initiative for a third successive season.
Pre-match, the Foundation will deliver on-pitch activities for participating children at the Steel City Stadium. The children will also have the opportunity to walk out with the players as mascots ahead of kick-off.
Following the final whistle, attendees will move to the Canon Medical Arena, where Maghrib prayers will take place. Adults and children will then break their fast together at sunset, with food once again kindly donated by local restaurant, Indus.
Eagles Foundation Inclusion Officer, Liliana Ciaraolo, commented: "We are excited to host our third community Iftar here at Sheffield Eagles this weekend. Over the past few years, we have delivered weekly sessions for children from DESA (Darnall Education and Sports Academy), and at after-school clubs at Phillimore Primary School.
“Being able to host a community Iftar for children and their families during a sacred month of the Islamic faith is extremely important and exciting for Sheffield Eagles and the Eagles Foundation. We have invited people from different faiths and backgrounds to come together and celebrate Ramadan together this weekend.”
The Eagles Foundation extends its sincere thanks to Indus and Sheffield Trades Union Council (TUC) for their generous support of the event.
Thanks, are also extended to Kamran Din of local partners DESA (Darnall Education and Sports Academy), and Alima Ashfaq of Sheffield Young Explorers for their continued guidance and support.
Appreciation is further expressed to Sheffield Sharks and the Canon Medical Arena for accommodating the Maghrib prayer following Saturday’s fixture.
