Championship schedule for Eagles Women
08/03/2023
On International Women’s Day, we’re celebrating the Eagles Women who kickstart their 2023 Championship season away at Widnes this Sunday!
Last year was the Eagles’ debut campaign in League 1 and they came out of the other side with a promotion to revel in.
Just one defeat, early in the season to Swinton Lionesses, meant it was a season to remember for all involved including Head Coach Liam Browne.
“A rollercoaster, absolutely!” Browne said when asked to describe 2022.
“There is a lot of things for us to improve on and work at but there were so many positives.
"The fact we’ve kept everyone together shows that not only did we do well but everyone loves being part of the club.”
The Eagles welcomed fellow Championship side Hull FC to the OLP as part of the club’s pre-season triple-header. A two-point defeat - 24-26 - gave Browne and his squad further belief that they’re set for another good campaign.
“It showed us that we belong in this league and we can hold our own,” he added.
“We still have some big steps to make to be that little bit more competitive.
“We’re already looking at shapes and different styles of rugby that we can implement.
“Last year was pretty simple rugby for us, that worked but this year we need to step up a gear.”
All but two of the Eagles’ games will be played at the Olympic Legacy Park in 2023 - a massive boost for the Women, who had one standalone fixture at the ground last year.
498 people were treated to a dominant semi-final victory against Halifax Panthers - the Eagles winning 82-16.
“We love being at the OLP and being part of the double-headers is great,” Browne commented.
“After our game, we can stick around and cheer the Men on.
“Having standalone fixtures and being able to stand on our own two feet is just as good, especially as we drew in a big crowd for the Halifax semi-final last season.
“Everyone is thrilled that we can play all but one of the games at the OLP.”
