Betfred Championship R21: London vs Sheffield Preview

29/07/2022

Sheffield Eagles go into their Summer Bash fixture against London Broncos after stopping a rot of five consecutive losses when they beat Workington Town last weekend.

One of those five losses came in extraordinary fashion against the Broncos, who overturned a 28-0 half-time deficit to beat the Eagles 36-28 at the Kuflink Stadium in Ebbsfleet.

Since then, London have been in fine form under the stewardship of Mike Eccles. Two wins from three matches, their only loss coming against Featherstone Rovers, has put the capital club in a brilliant position as they look to fight off any relegation worries.

Last time out, they beat Halifax Panthers 38-10 at the Cherry Red Records Stadium and London know if they can get another win under their belt soon - they may have to focus further up the table rather than looking over their shoulder.

Key Battle - Oli Leyland | Anthony Thackeray

The key battle comes in the halves for the Summer Bash opener between the Broncos and Eagles on Saturday.

The impact of Anthony Thackeray on the Eagles side is clear to see. Even more so after last weekend in his first game back from injury as he notched four tries against Workington Town.

Meanwhile, London’s Oli Leyland is enjoying his time in the Broncos first team and is flourishing under coach Eccles.

The homegrown star is looking right at home in the Championship and the scrum-cap wearing playmaker can certainly cause opposition defenders a few headaches with his nifty running game.

Live on TV

If you cannot make it to Headingley tomorrow, the match will be shown live on Premier Sports - as will the rest of the Summer Bash fixtures. The Championship takes over Headingley for one weekend only, don’t miss out!
