Aston: A lot of work to do ahead of Halifax test
After seeing his side scrape a 25-25 draw against Whitehaven last weekend, Eagles Director of Rugby Mark Aston admitted there was plenty of work for his side to do before facing Halifax Panthers on Sunday.
A drop goal from Anthony Thackeray on the stoke of full-time spared Sheffield’s blushes against the enthusiastic Cumbrians.
Aston said there wasn’t a lack of effort from his troops but he thought they were “sluggish and shabby” in certain areas.
“We’ll have to look at it,” he commented on the performance.
“We went hard enough at training and did a lot of contact because we weren’t happy with that against Featherstone.
“We were soft so we had a chat about that and did some work.
“I thought we were getting back towards where we want to be in regard to training.
“We worked hard but when you lack a bit of confidence, you need something or someone to galvanise you.
“Maybe getting that point right at the end will do that for us.”
Aston and prop forward Brad Knowles have spoken in recent weeks about the squad needing to take accountability for their own actions.
Coupled with the Eagles chief mentioning a lack of confidence, he says there will be a focus on the group’s mentality as they face the Panthers on Sunday.
“We’ll analyse ourselves to see what we can do better and how we’ll do it,” he added.
“We have a lot of work to do, including on our mental approach.
“We’re in Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday before facing Halifax on Sunday.
“We have to bring our a-game every week as there are plenty of teams in this competition that can beat you.
"If you don’t perform, you’ll come away second best."
