Sheffield Eagles Women’s Red player Agnes Wood was delighted to make her debut for Wales in their recent World Cup European Qualifiers clash against Ireland last weekend.
Having previously been uncapped for her country, Wood came off the bench to help Wales record a 28-10 victory last Saturday at Cardiff University Sports Park.
She went on to play for the Eagles Women’s Red side only a day later, as she helped them to back-to-back league victories in the Women’s North Championship with a 36-6 win over Stanningley.
We caught up with Wood this week to gather her thoughts following on from her international debut for Wales.
“I originally took part in the open trials in February, after which they selected a World Cup training squad,” said Wood.
“I got a call last week from head coach Tom Brindle saying I had been selected for the team and I was excited to join the squad.
“The game itself was amazing, everyone worked well together, and we were able to execute the plan we had set out. It’s a real testament to the work from the coaches and their dedication to the team.”
Wood has so far played a key part in the opening Women’s Red squad games, having scored two tries against York Valkyrie in the Women’s Challenge Cup, a try in their opening league game against Leigh Leopards, before going over for a score also this weekend in the win over Stanningley.
Wood has enjoyed the start that the team have made, and she hopes that they can continue their good run of form of late.
Wood added “It’s been a great start to the season for the red team. We worked really hard over pre-season, and opening with the Challenge Cup game against York gave us a great opportunity and challenge to develop what we had practised.
“I had a great time playing against York in that game, it was amazing that we were given the opportunity to play against such talented athletes and the team were able to really enjoy the match, despite the score line.
“Safe to say it gave us plenty to work on and we are starting to put it into practice.
“The partnership with York has also brought about lots of benefits to the team. The opportunity to do pre-season with them and having dual registration means we are seeing lots of improvement in the team.
“Having the players from York come and play for us has been hugely beneficial, with such talented players bringing a lot to the team and you can see it with some of our recent results on the field.”
