Wheelchair Team Round up

By David Butler
We had both of our Wheelchair sides in action at the weekend as both our Red and Gold sides took to the field at the English Institute of Sport on Saturday.
Sheffield Eagles Red 58 – Wakefield Trinity 6
Sheffield Eagles moved clear at the top of Championship East as the Red side beat a dogged Wakefield side 58-6 in the team’s first home game of the league season on Saturday.
First quarter braces for Joe Wink-Simmonds and Stephen Reilly sandwiched a Will Brooks penalty kick at goal to give the Eagles a 22 point lead, but Wakefield dug in and frustrated the Eagles who conceded a penalty kicked by Sid Ramsey on the half hour mark. Shortly afterwards, Ramsey found his way to the try line, but was unable to improve the kick with the scores at 22-6 at the break.
Brooks opened the scoring in the second half, shortly before Chris Haynes added a try, with Wink-Simmonds completing his hat-trick before Reilly added three further tries to boost the Eagles tally. Ramsey attempted another penalty kick at goal which was missed and Brooks had the final word with a final try of the day to round out the win.
Next up is Hull Kingston Rovers who stage their home game against the Eagles in Sheffield at the EIS on Saturday 29th June, 10.30am Kick Off, with the clubs’ two “A” teams playing a fixture following at 12.30pm.

Sheffield Eagles A 14 – Bradford Bulls A 42
Sheffield Eagle A hosted Bradford Bulls A in a friendly game, which saw the Gold team play some very competitive Wheelchair Rugby League throughout the game.
Daniel McGrath and Isabelle Wright were the Bulls’ first half scorers with Helen Calder crossing for the Eagles before half time to ensure the Eagles kept things in touch in what proved to be a very close encounter.
The Bulls stretched the lead in the second half as Wright and Darren Walker added further tries but Ben Wilson’s brace pegged them back. Corey Bairstow’s explosive hat-trick in the last quarter, with Charlie Wanless also adding a try proved to be decisive with the Bulls the victors in a game played in great spirit where both sides benefited from the game time!
