Sheffield Eagles Appoint Ryan Sheridan as New Head Coach
18/10/2026
Sheffield Eagles are delighted to announce the appointment of former player Ryan Sheridan as the club’s new Head Coach.
Sheridan returns to the club where his professional rugby league career began, bringing extensive experience from both his playing days and a distinguished coaching career.
Most recently, Sheridan spent three seasons as Assistant Coach at Super League side Catalans Dragons, joining the French outfit in 2024 under Steve McNamara. During his time in France, he also worked under Joel Tomkins and briefly took on the role of Interim Head Coach following Tomkins’ departure, before John Cartwright’s arrival last season.
Prior to joining Catalans Dragons, Sheridan held Assistant Coach roles at Featherstone Rovers, Castleford Tigers, Warrington Wolves and London Broncos, where he built a wealth of experience across the professional game.
A former half-back, Sheridan began his rugby league journey in the Eagles’ academy before making his first-team debut on the 8th December 1991. Wearing Heritage Number #142, he came off the bench in a 35–2 victory over Workington Town.
Over the next five seasons, Sheridan established himself as a regular in the Sheffield Eagles side, enjoying his most prolific campaign in 1994–95 when he scored 16 tries in 30 appearances.
His final season with the Eagles saw him partner Dean Lawford at half-back in the inaugural Super League fixture against Paris Saint-Germain in March 1996. At the end of that season, he departed the club having made a total of 97 appearances and scored 40 tries for the Eagles.
Sheridan later went on to play for Leeds Rhinos, Widnes Vikings, Castleford Tigers and Dewsbury Rams during a playing career which spanned 14 years, before he made the move into coaching and has worked with several established clubs across the professional game.
Speaking on becoming our new Head Coach, Sheridan said, “I am really excited to be back at the Eagles where I started my playing career over 35 years ago, so this is a full circle moment for me.
“This club gave me an opportunity and a start all those years ago, it gave me what was to become an unbelievable journey in rugby league.
“This is a new journey for me now, after speaking with Jeremy (Levine) about his vision for the Eagles and his passion to see the club grow and become successful, it was something that I wanted to be a part of.
“To become the head coach of the Eagles is a huge honour for me, I can’t wait to get started and help the club move forward into an exciting future ahead.”
Now, more than three decades after making his first-team debut, Sheridan returns to Sheffield Eagles to lead the club into the 2027 Championship season.
He will take up the position with immediate effect, as the Eagles prepare to return to pre-season training in November ahead of the new campaign.
Everyone at Sheffield Eagles is delighted to welcome Ryan back to the club and wishes him every success as he begins this new chapter as Head Coach.
