21/08/2024
Sheffield Eagles 120-26 Hull KR - Championship East | Saturday 17th August @ English Institute of Sport
Sheffield Eagles Wheelchair took one move further towards securing first place in the Championship East league with a 120-16 demolition of Hull Kingston Rovers.
The Eagles steamrollered into the game with an early Joe Wink-Simmonds brace, before England hopeful Chris Haynes added a hat-trick. Ben Simpson and Vicky Brooks were next in, before the Brooks siblings of Will and April added a try and a hat-trick respectively, with Haynes and Jenny Pearson adding further scores.
Rovers found their way onto the scoresheet on the stroke of half time as Jacob Johnson bagged himself a try, but as the hooter went, Hull KR already had a mountain to climb.
It looked like that mountain might well have been scaled as the second half got underway with two quick fire scores from Matt Felmingham giving Rovers a dream start to the half.
But they were soon awakened as the Eagles came back alive with the second half belonging to the teenaged Will Brooks who added a second half hat-trick and a pile of conversions, with sister April adding a further try and mum Vicky completing her hat-trick.
Karl Jacob found his way to the try line to keep the Robins moving their side of the scoreboard forward.
James Birchnall’s two late scores gave him his first competitive tries in Eagles colours, before Aaron Good’s final try for Rovers completed their scoring, with the final word going to Karl Jacob who kicked a late penalty to add some further respectability to the score.
The Eagles now have Bradford at home on Sunday 8th September and currently 2nd place team York Knights away on Saturday 14th September, with a win against Bradford, making it an almost certainty that the Eagles will take the title.

Sheffield Eagles Wheelchair Gold vs Hull KR Wheelchair 'A' - Friendly | Saturday 17th August @ English Institute of Sport
The Eagles A team took on their Hull Kingston Rovers counterparts in a friendly, giving both sides’ large squads a great opportunity to play and gain experience.
Hull KR were dominant, with several players doubling up into their first team game, but the game was very competitive at times, with the Eagles providing a stronger showing in the second half.
It was one-way traffic in the first half as Hull KR racked up a 4-43 score, with Ben Wilson beating the referee’s whistle to get the home side off the mark before the break.
It was Wilson who crossed next for the Eagles just after the hour mark, with the Robins continuing to power forward, with youngster Chris Brown adding a final try for the Eagles in the dying minutes, with Barry Grayson converting.
The Gold side travel to York on Sunday 25th August for a festival with York and Hull FC’s Development Sides before they take on Bradford Bulls A as part of a Wheelchair double header on Sunday 8th September.
