Mikey Wood signs two-year deal
20/10/2021
Sheffield Eagles are delighted to announce the signing of forward Mikey Wood on a two-year deal.
The 26-year-old utility has had permanent spells with Huddersfield Giants, Bradford Bulls, Newcastle Thunder and most recently Hunslet RLFC.
Wood returns to the Championship with Sheffield after he finished the 2021 season at the South Leeds Stadium.
“I’m over the moon, it’s a club building well and looking towards the future, '' the forward said.
“When they came in, it was perfect for me.”
The opportunity to work alongside Eagles Director of Rugby Mark Aston was an attraction for the former Huddersfield Giants academy star.
When asked about his new boss, Wood added: “Tubbs as a coach, he’s got a top reputation, he’s always brought lads on and got the best out of them,”
“When they (Sheffield) came in, it was perfect for me.”
“I’ve been down and talked to Tubbs and everything looks spot on.”
Wood is pleased to gain a two-year deal at the club after an unsettled couple of years.
“It was a massive thing that I spoke about, I want to stay at a club where I can make a mark,” he said.
“I’m 26-years old, I don’t want to be going from team to team, I want to be at a club that’s building and I’ve found that.”
Aston is pleased to see Wood sign for the Steel City club and has complimented his skillset and potential.
“He is big and strong but has good ability,” the Eagles chief said.
“He has been drifting for the past few years but now he needs to refocus and I think there’s more (improvement) in him.
“He is uncompromising and fearless, people may have forgotten about him but he has a big future with the Sheffield Eagles.”
