Match Report | Workington Town 16-28 Sheffield Eagles
11/05/2026
The Eagles produced a dominant attacking display in Cumbria on Sunday afternoon, returning to winning ways with a 16-28 victory against Workington Town.
Head Coach Craig Lingard made three changes to his starting thirteen from last time out against Widnes for the trip up north.
Kieran Gill returned as he lined up to make his 200th career appearance, whilst there were also starts for Jordan Abdull and Harry Bowes, who both made their returns to action. George Griffin dropped to the bench, whilst there was a return for Alex Foster, who made his comeback from injury.
The Eagles started the game strong as Blake Broadbent crashed over under the posts inside the opening ten minutes to give the Eagles an early lead.
Sheffield continued to control possession and territory, forcing back-to-back penalties through disciplined attacking pressure. Abdull’s kicking game repeatedly troubled Workington, with one testing kick forcing a goal-line drop-out and keeping the hosts pinned deep inside their own half.
More pressure eventually came off-the-back of that for the Eagles as Billy Walkley went over in the left corner to score, before fellow winger Ryan Millar added another try after Harry Bowes’ clever kick to the corner, shortly after.
The Eagles finished the first half in style as Lennie Ellis crossed for his first try for the club in the 34th minute, before Walkley grabbed his second try of the afternoon in the corner just before the half-time hooter.
The second half began much like the first ended, with the Eagles immediately back on the attack. Walkley completed his hat-trick in the 44th minute with another finish in the corner, after going over from dummy-half.
Workington responded with a period of sustained pressure in the final half an hour at the Fibrus Community Stadium as centre Rio Corkill went over for a hat-trick inside twenty second-half minutes to pull the game back to 16-28.
Despite the late rally from the home side, the Eagles’ first-half dominance proved decisive as they saw the game out comfortably to secure the win and take the two points back to South Yorkshire.
It’s a quick turnaround for the Eagles, who are back in Betfred Championship action on Friday evening, when we make the trip to The Shay to take on Halifax Panthers (7:30pm KO).
