Match Preview | Newcastle Thunder (H)
09/02/2024
Sheffield Eagles take on Newcastle Thunder in their first home game of the 2024 season this coming Saturday as both sides meet in the 3rd Round of the Betfred Challenge Cup (2pm).
Mark Aston's side will look to book their place in the next round of the competition this weekend as they set to come up against the recently-relegated Betfred League One side.
It’s been a good start to 2024 for the Eagles, firstly beating Super League side Hull KR 22-26 in a pre-season friendly, before securing a narrow victory over South Yorkshire rivals Doncaster last weekend in our first group game of the newly rebranded AB Sundecks 1895 Cup.
Newcastle Thunder will travel to Olympic Legacy Park hoping to bounce back to winning ways themselves as they look to advance in the competition, having fallen to a 10-114 defeat at the hands of York Knights RLFC two weeks ago.
It’s been a difficult off-season for this weekend’s opponents, who have had to deal with the loss of several key players moving on to new clubs, but Chris Thorman remains in charge as he looks to build the club up ready for a return to the Betfred Championship on-and-off the field.
