England Wheelchair Rugby League Tri Series

02/05/2025

Following an invitational festival at the University of Nottingham last month, the next step of the England Wheelchair Rugby League national talent pathway takes place on Sunday 11th May at the University of York.

The England Tri Series will see 24 players divided across three teams to show their talents with ultimately a place in the England National Performance Squad at stake.

Four Sheffield Eagles players will be in action, with Stephen Reilly, Martin Lane, Joe Wink-Simmonds and Chris Haynes all set to take part.

It’s another feather in the cap of the Eagles Wheelchair side which only formed in 2021 and follows on from Chris Haynes making his international debut and scoring two tries in England’s victory over Spain.

“I’d like to congratulate Steve, Martin, Joe and Chris on their selection for the Tri Series and wish them luck on the day” said Wheelchair Head Coach Greg Brown.

“We had two other players, Ben Simpson and Will Brooks, also invited to the event in April and whilst they have not been selected for the Tri Series on this occasion, they will continue their development at club level with us in Super League during 2025 and remain in contention for future selection.

“Apart from Martin, all of them have all started their Wheelchair Rugby League journey with us here in Sheffield and we’re all very proud that despite our club being a relative newcomer, we are giving players the opportunity to play at the very highest level whilst at the same time ensuring that we do not lose focus on making our club accessible to as many people as possible regardless of their experience or ambitions.”

The Tri Series will see a busy weekend of Wheelchair Rugby League as action as it follows the Eagles quarter-final clash with Edinburgh Giants in the Betfred Wheelchair Challenge Cup on Saturday 10th May, 2pm kick off at Ponds Forge International Sports Centre.

Both events are free of charge to spectators.
