Eagles vs Hull triple-header recap

23/01/2023

After a momentous day of rugby league in Sheffield, with three Eagles teams in competitive action - alongside the brilliant Learning Disability team at half-time of the Men’s game - here’s a quick recap if you missed anything!

Wheelchair

In their second pre-season game, it was a second draw for the Eagles Wheelchair team who are showing a massive improvement already following their debut year.

At a well-attended Forge Valley, the Eagles and Hull FC’s Development squad played out an entertaining 26-26 draw.

With 15 minutes to go, Joe Wink-Simmonds touched down to put Sheffield 26-22 as they searched for their first win but it wasn’t to be as Hull fired back late on.

Try-scorers for Eagles Wheelchair: Simmonds, Emma Pearson, Stephen Reilly (2), Will Brooks

Women

The first of two matches at the Olympic Legacy Park saw Sheffield Eagles Women’s fightback against Hull fall just short, losing 24-26.

Charlotte Johnstone got on the board twice while Simone Saunders and Agnes Wood both touched down too.

Johnstone's second try and Wood’s weaving effort came in the latter stages which will certainly give Head Coach Liam Browne optimism heading into his side’s Championship campaign.

Men

The Eagles Men were on course for a pre-season shock as they led a strong Hull FC side 20-12 at half-time.

It would be Hull’s second string, to a certain extent, that would turn the game around for the visitors - aided by the likes of Brad Dwyer and Danny Houghton.

Cory Aston notched twice for the Eagles, with former Hull pair Connor Bower and Matty Dawson-Jones also getting on the first half scoresheet.

Mark Aston’s men certainly battled in the second period but tries from Houghton and Cameron Scott were enough to send the Super League side home with the spoils.

Next up..

The Men face Doncaster on Sunday at 3pm. Tickets can be purchased on the gate for this friendly but they’re also on sale here.

A reminder that Season Memberships are not valid for pre-season fixtures.
