Eagles sign experienced hooker Wood

Sheffield Eagles are delighted to announce the signing of Kyle Wood on a one-year deal.
The Castleford-born hooker first played for the Eagles in 2009 following a breakthrough season at Doncaster. After scoring an impressive eight tries in 26 appearances for the Red and Golds, the forward joined Huddersfield Giants in the Super League.
Wood returned to Sheffield on loan in 2011 for a brief spell before a permanent move to Wakefield Trinity beckoned, where Wood made 165 appearances over two separate stints.
His three-year spell at the Giants ended when Wood rejoined Trinity in 2017 before he moved across West Yorkshire to Halifax in 2021, where he has spent the past two years, and recently announced his retirement from the game.
Director of Rugby Mark Aston said: “We are delighted to have signed Kyle for 2024. He is an experienced hooker who has played the majority of his career at the top level. His knowledge, organisation and quality out of dummy half will help us throughout next season.
"It is no secret that we have been looking for another out-and-out no.9 since the abrupt retirement of James Davey in 2021 to provide V (Vila Halafihi) with more competition. Jack Hansen has done a great job there over the past 12 months, but this move should give him more opportunities to showcase his talent elsewhere.
“I'm looking forward to having Kyle back around. After speaking with him, he is not quite ready to hang his boots up, and he still feels like he has something to offer, which we are delighted about."
