Eagles raided by rampant Rovers

18/08/2023

Sheffield Eagles tasted defeat on home turf for just the second time this season as the table-topping Featherstone Rovers returned to West Yorkshire with a 10-38 triumph.

The Eagles did take the lead after five minutes courtesy of Ben Jones-Bishop, who squeezed over in the corner.

It took Featherstone a while to get into the contest but after Arama Hau’s quick-fire double, they wouldn’t relinquish their advantage.

Caleb Aekins also went over to put Featherstone 4-18 to the good but Matty Dawson-Jones answered back for Sheffield, from a well-worked scrum play.

In games such as this, gilt-edged chances need to be taken and an Anthony Thackeray break created just that. However, a pass went to ground and Featherstone - with a minute left on the clock - made the Eagles pay as Junior Moors crashed over.

Just three tries were scored in the second half, all went the way of a Featherstone side who controlled proceedings professionally.

Chris Hankinson, Dane Chisholm and Gareth Gale were the try-scorers for the Flatcappers, who extend their buffer at the top of the table.
