Eagles celebrate 25th Year Anniversary since club's reform

28/12/2024

Today, 28th December, marks the 25th anniversary since the reformation of the Sheffield Eagles.

Following the proposed Huddersfield-Sheffield Giants merger in 1999, the prospects for Rugby League in Sheffield looked bleak, but Mark Aston led a race to get a new Sheffield Eagles club up and running in time to start the new season with the deadline only weeks away.

The club’s application was initially knocked back but, in the “replay”, Eagles were admitted to the league and began their new existence at Chorley on 28th December 1999, as the Eagles ran out as 20-33 winners against Lancashire Lynx.

Over the course of the last 25 years, the Eagles have achieved a rich history of milestones and achievements:

2003 – National League 2 League runners-up

2006 – National League 2 Promotion Playoff Winners

2011 – Championship Grand Final runners-up

2012 – Championship Grand Final Winners

2013 - Championship Grand Final Winners, Northern Rail Cup Finalists

2019 – 1895 Cup Winners

2024 – 1895 Cup runners-up

Sheffield Eagles Club President Chris Noble MBE said “Having been through the reform of the club 25 years ago with Mark Aston and many others, there has been some ups and downs across the years, but we’re proud to see the club reach this milestone and see what we have achieved so far as a club.

“We look forward to a successful 2025, and another successful 25 years on-and-off the field”
