Club Statement - Furlough Leave

31/03/2020

Sheffield Eagles can today announce that the club have placed its staff, including all players, office and backroom staff on furlough leave.

The Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme (CRJS) has been brought in by the government in order to allow employers to place their employees on a temporary leave of absence, with 80% or up to £2500 of their wages covered by the government.

With the current 2020 Rugby League season suspended indefinitely due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the club has taken these steps to ensure jobs and the club as a whole is protected during these unprecedented times.

All players were spoken to last week and have agreed to the furlough agreement set out by club along with those affected members of staff.

Sheffield Eagles Chairman Chris Noble MBE said, “These are worrying times for everyone across the country and we have taken swift and immediate action to try and ensure we best protect our players, staff and the club.

“The situation is ever changing and with no confirmed end date of current government guidlines or a recommencement of the 2020 season we have had to put these measures in place.

“I would like to go on record thanking all of our playing and backroom staff for their understanding and support of what we have implemented along with those staff who helped ensure this was sorted in a quick and professional manner.

“They are all a credit to Sheffield Eagles, and I look forward to welcoming them all back to work once we are ready to recommence training and matches.

“I’d also like to express the club's thanks to the Rugby Football League (RFL) for their help and support during this difficult time.”

The club will be making no further comment at this time.
