25/04/2024

Sheffield Eagles Women’s Red Team player Agnes Wood has been selected in Wales Women’s National squad for this weekend’s World Cup European Qualifiers Group A clash against Ireland.

The two sides go head-to-head on Saturday afternoon at Cardiff University Sports Park (2:45pm), a game in which could see Wood make her international debut for Wales.

Wood is one of five selected players who could make their first appearance for Wales alongside Cardiff Demons quartet Kim Boaler, Lucia Davies, Tara Finnegan and Chelcey Greasley.

Speaking on her call-up, Wood said “I am so excited to be given the opportunity to represent Wales, it has been an incredible process getting to this stage and being able to train with such talented players.

“I couldn’t have done any of it without the support of the Sheffield Eagles team, and particularly the Foundation. I am incredibly grateful for everything they’ve done for me.”

Sheffield Eagles Women’s Red Head Coach Liam Browne said “We're all immensely proud of Agnes and how far she's come. From laughing at me when I suggested she played hooker, to being selected for the Welsh national side, we all wish her luck, and we know she'll gave a great game.”

Andrea Dobson, Development Officer at the Eagles Foundation added “We've strived as a club to create a quality environment for our players to thrive and develop, so to have Agnes gain some representative honours is great for our club, and a testament to the hard work Agnes puts in.

“She is one of our key players, a real leader in the team and I'm sure she'll do the club proud!”
