York (A) 11th August |
York City Knights 39-20 Sheffield Eagles
Sheffield Eagles Reserves finished a progressive season with an excellent
showing in defeat at Huntingdon Stadium. The performance was even more
impressive given this was the third game in a week. In the end the
experience and skill of new signing Loz Wildbore was the difference.
Sheffield started superbly and raced into a 16-0 lead after half
and hour. Gavin Brown and Ben Price both spotted gaps and scored in under
six minutes and Price was in again after thirty. A sloppy five minutes
before half time allowed York to close the gap to two at the break. Tries
from Wildbore, Chris Peacock and Tom Stancliffe made it 14-16 at the
turnaround.
York scored first in the second half through Wildbore but then a
great pass by Brown put Jamie Cottle through a gap and we were level again
at 20-20.
The fitness started to show and with twenty minutes left the
Knights pulled away to victory with two more tries from Wildbore and one
from Centre Adam Caddie. Wildbore also added a drop goal and York ran out
comfortable 39-20 winners in a game that was a lot closer than the score
suggests.
The Sheffield players and staff deserve credit for their
outstanding progressive work this year and can look forward to next year
with great optimism.

Sheffield Eagles 18-60 Hunslet Hawks
Sheffield Eagles Reserves we taught another harsh lesson as
Hunslet ran out comfortable winners on another bright Saturday in
Hillsborough.
Hunslet got the first try on just four minutes through Stand off
Chris Redfearn but Sheffield were level with Greg Pygott crossing after a
penalty.
From them on the Hawks imposed themselves on the game and further scores
from Props Ben Walkin and Joe Howey and Winger Scott Childs with two to make
it 6-28 at the break.
The pattern followed suit in the second half, Howey adding two
more tries before the Eagles good efforts were rewarded with a try for
Centre Dan Townson. Walking then powered over for his second before
excellent Sheffield groundwork provided Luke Holt with a chance to pounce
and score.
Further Hunslet tries followed from Full Back Tom Sheldrake,
Backrowers Nathan Goodman and John Richardson to complete the scoring.

Sheffield
Eagles 26 v Dewsbury Rams 30 (played at Dewsbury)
Two
missed conversions cost Sheffield a deserved share of the spoils in the
re-arranged Reserve game played at Dewsbury on Wednesday night.
Sheffield
and Dewsbury shared ten tries in an exciting game but Pat Walkers five from
five with the boot ensured a narrow victory for the “home” side.
The game
started brightly for the Eagles when after just eight minutes outstanding
Full-Back Jamie Cottle superbly sprinted through a gap to score the first of
his three tries. Greg Pygott landed the goal for an early 6-0 lead.
Dewsbury
were back on level terms on fourteen minutes after Sheffield gave them field
position with a penalty for offside. Prop James Lockwood going over by the
posts and Walkers first of five made it 6-6. Sheffield re-gathered from the
kick off but were unable to capitalize.
Following
a Sheffield Knock-on, Dewbsury were next on the board when on the third
tackle Walker bulldozed his way over and converted his own try on twenty-one
minutes.
Dewsbury
scored two tries in rapid succession just before half time to put a slightly
unfair slant on the scoreboard. Firstly Winger Morgan Starkey went over on
the last tackle after Greg Pygott failed to find touch from a penalty and
then Back Row Forward Liam Crawley scored also on the last tackle right on
the whistle for a Rams lead of 24-6 at the break.
Sheffield
were quick to respond after the break, just six minutes in Cottle had his
second after Eddie Battye had been held up over the line and it was 24-12.
Dewsbury
scored their fifth and last of the night on fifty minutes through Allistar
McMaster and at 30-12 the game looked almost over. Sheffield didn’t agree
and fought back with a touchdown from Mark Renshaw-Smith thirteen minutes
later. Pygott missed his first and the score was 30-16 after sixty three
minutes.
Sheffield
were in again just two minutes later with Cottle’s hat-trick try straight
from the scrum base after the Dewsbury defender put a foot in touch.
Dewsbury
put the restart out on the full and Sheffield applied the pressure but
errors and good defence meant that by the time Sheffield scored their last
try their wasn’t enough time left for the restart. Joe Groves got the try
and Pygott narrowly missed the conversion to make the final score 30-26 to
the Rams.

Sheffield Eagles
22-62 Featherstone Rovers
Sheffield Eagles Reserves turned in a better
showing than the week before against Leigh but
were still on the receiving end of a lesson by a
very clinical and committed Featherstone side
containing first-teamers Stuart Kain and Dwayne
Barker.
Featherstone pounced on the first error of the
game when Greg Pygott lost the ball and tom Carr
scored in the corner for an early visitors lead.
Featherstone were in again after just seven
minutes after Sheffield were penalized for
offside, Dwayne Barker again on the far left
with the try and Aaron Dobek with the goal for
10-0.
On fifteen minutes Sheffield progressed
downfield after consecutive penalties against
Rovers and finally found a way through when Dan
Hawksworth crossed by the posts. Pygott with the
goal for reduce the arrears to four.
Fev then turned the screw, capitalizing after
Pygott fumbled a kick and Dobek was there to
sweep up and convert his own try for 16-6. That
became 28-6 by half time after tries from Paul
Brown and Jon Fallon. Despite the score
Sheffield had completed over 75% of their sets.
The second half is where the visitors showed
their class and Prop Mark Falkingham took just
four minutes to register the next score.
Sheffield showed they could fight back and Joe
Groves got his first of two on fifty minutes
before Rovers responded seven later through the
impressive Dobek again. Hardaker and Dobek
completing his hat-trick were the next scores
before Greg Pygott excellently returned a kick
to score under the posts and make it 18-50.
Featherstone scored two more tries, Subs Darren
Bryan and Adam Scott exposing the tiring home
defence before Sheffield deservedly got the last
try of the game right on the whistle the
excellent Groves with his second.
Despite the score Sheffield played well in long
spells and had good ball control. Featherstone
can take a lot of satisfaction from a very good
showing against a side who almost beat them at
Post Office Road.

Leigh (H) 18th JULY 2009 |

Sheffield Eagles 12-50 Leigh Centurions
An outstanding first half showing by Sheffield against tough opposition
ended up coming to nothing on Saturday afternoon at Hillsborough Arena.
With over 70% completion and some excellent defence, the Eagles
were level at 12-12 at half time after recovering from 10-0 down.
Leigh were first to strike after Sheffield had had the better of
the opening exchanges on 14 minutes, fullback Dean Dollin getting over in
the left corner for a 4-0 lead. Leigh were in again just four minutes later
with Dean Hatton intercepting a Jamie Cottle pass to race over and convert
his own try for 10-0.
Sheffield then stepped up a gear and on the back of good build up
work were on the scoreboard through Sub Dan Cribbis, Greg Pygott converting
to bring the home side back into the game. Five minutes later Sheffield were
ahead. Dan Townson finishing off after an interception by Pygott who then
kicked the goal to go 12-10 ahead.
On the stroke of half time Leigh equalised with a penalty from
Hatton after the Eagles were caught offside defending close to their line.
In the second half Leigh stamped their authority on the game,
Dollin got his second try in the corner after a kick and then Andy Ainscough
went through a gap and suddenly the lead was 20-12. Sheffield then tried to
force their way back into the game but a moment of high controversy put the
visitors further ahead.
Sheffield held up the Leigh attacker on the last but instead of
awarding a turnover, the referee gave Leigh an extra tackle from which they
scored. This try was effectively the gamebreaker. Despite flashes of good
skill from the home side, the Centrurions rounded the game out with tries
from Lee Wingfield, James Richies, Wingfield again with an eighty meter
breakaway and Martin Ridyard. Hatton finishing with seven goals from ten
attempts.
Featherstone
visit next week and Sheffield can look to build on that first half display
with optimism.

Leigh (A) 4th July R1 |
Leigh Centurions 74-12 Sheffield Eagles
Sheffield Eagles Reserves were given a lesson in ball control and finishing
on Saturday in the sunshine at Twist Lane.
The young Sheffield side were on the back foot from the start
after spilling the kick off and then being forced to drop out twice in the
first four minutes. Inevitable Leigh were first on the board after Centre
Dean Dollin scored in the far left corner after a high kick. Dean Hatton
missing the conversion attempt.
Further scores from Jordan Gibson after a 40-20 and Sean
MacDonald made it 16-0 before the visitors registered their first points,
Jamie Cottle getting over after good work by Ed Battye following a rare
Leigh error.
After the last score of the half from Ryan Powell after half an
hour, Sheffield competed well but their inability to retain the ball was
giving Leigh extra sets to force pressure.
The pressure told just a minute after the restart, Hatton scoring
and converting his own try. Sub Ryan O’Toole, Prop Danny Meakin, Centre Sam
Raey, Dean Dollin again and Ritchie Shaw all scoring in the space of
fifteen minutes and Sheffield were 56-6 down and the game was gone, they
simply could not get possession of the ball back, not for the lack of effort
for by visitors, who did compete well in spells with the ball in hand.
Winger Gareth Thomas scored from a superb high kick by Gibson on
64 minutes to increase the lead but Sheffield struck next. Another good
break from Battye allowing Ade Adeyire go crash over by the posts.
Leigh rounded the game off with scores from Powell and Back Row
Forward Andy Ainscough to secure a comfortable win.

Sheffield Eagles Reserves 16-12 Doncaster Reserves
Sheffield Eagles Reserves left it late but recorded a fine win in the
Saturday sunshine against local rivals Doncaster in the Reserve Team First
Division.
It wasn’t a pretty game with lots of handling errors by both sides but it
did ensure it was a dramatic game. For the first ten minutes the exchanges
were pretty fair before the home team registered the first score on twelve
minutes on the back of a penalty, Gavin Brown creating the space for Dan
Townson to score out on the left. Brown then missed the conversion for a 4-0
lead.
Doncaster struck next just seven minutes later when Winger James Cryer
pounced on Adam Brooks error to score and with Andrew Wilson making the
conversion the visitors were suddenly 6-4 ahead. The rest of the half was
littered with errors by both sides and that was the score at the break.
The second half followed the first in terms of errors but the effort being
shown was outstanding. The visitors extended their lead on 63 minutes when
Cryer scored his second on the third repeat set on the Sheffield line.
Wilson was again accurate for a 12-4 lead.
On the back of a penalty for offside, Sheffield were back in the game just
four minutes later when Prop Eddie Battye powered over by the posts of a
Brown pass and Brown kicked the conversion for and the lead was down to two.
Both sides were franticly searching for a winner but it was Sheffield who
got it three minutes from time when Corey Hanson scored following up a
superb break and pass from Hooker Kyle Kesik. Brown again accurate and that
rounded out the scoring.
Doncaster almost stole it right at the death when Steven Pryce had the ball
stolen one on one but the home defence held out superbly to win a thrilling
game.

Hunslet Hawks 32-22 Sheffield
Eagles
Reserve Team First Division
Friday 19th June 2009
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times…..
The proverbial match of two halves
became reality on Friday night at South Leeds Stadium as Sheffield Eagles
Reserves threw away a twenty two point lead and crashed to defeat.
The game started well for the
visitors, forcing Hunslet to make errors and gaining field position. Hooker
Kyle Kesik was first to strike on just six minutes with a superb run from
dummy half to cross by the posts. Pygott tagging on the extra two. Just four
minutes later on the back of a penalty Ashley Thackeray went over in the
corner to extend the lead but this time Pygott missed from out wide.
Just three minutes later the
eagles were in again, Kyle Kesik with a virtual carbon copy of his first
try, Pygott was successful this time and Sheffield were 16-0 to the good
after just thirteen minutes.
The game then got scrappy for
fifteen minutes with lots of errors and penalties for both sides before the
visitors got their fourth try after half an hour when some superb offloading
bamboozled the home defence and allowed Thackeray to squeeze over out wide
for his second of the night, Pygott again successful for 22-0.
Then it all started to go wrong.
After a couple of earlier close calls Hunslet finally troubled the scorers
after a half break by Centre Ryan Glynn from the base of the scrum and Ian
Gordon added the extras to cut the lead to 6-22 at half time.
The second half proved to be a
disaster for the Eagles as errors and penalties meant they couldn’t get hold
of the ball for long enough to add to their total whilst Hunslet used their
possession to good effect to claw the deficit back. Loose Forward Scott
Bradley was first on 49 minutes on the back of one of the many penalties
awarded in the match, and just three minutes later Prop Ben Walkin was over
and with both conversions the Hawks were now just four behind.
Hunslet were then ahead on 58
minutes when Glynn scored his second from the scrum base after Sheffield
Knocked On trying to intercept. With the conversion they were now two ahead.
Gordon then knocked a penalty after Sheffield incorrectly played the ball.
Hunslet’s fifth try from Louis
Stead on 64 was again from a penalty and from twenty two down the home side
were ten ahead. Sheffield looked to be back on the game with eight to go but
Thackeray was judged to have grounded the ball on the touchline. Ultimately
poor completion and errors cost Sheffield and Hunslet held on for the win.
Hunslet: Tom Sheldrake, Luke Rayner, Ryan Glynn, Michael Brown, Scott

Sheffield
Eagles Reserves 25-24 Widnes Vikings Reserves
Sheffield Eagles Reserves avenged their heavy defeat three weeks ago on
Merseyside in thrilling style with Greg Pygott’s drop goal five minutes from
time clinching a deserved victory in the sunshine on Saturday afternoon.
The early exchanges were pretty even before Widnes struck the first blow on
seven minutes, Second Row Sean Gilmore going through a gap to score by the
posts leaving an easy conversion for Tom Smith and a six point lead for the
visitors.
Almost immediately Sheffield were level. Widnes losing the ball two tackles
after the restart on their own 20 and Pygott pounced on the error to dive
over. Pygott converting his own try to level at 6-6. Widnes were next to
strike after forcing a scrum in the Eagles half. Centre Adam Bowman crashing
over after thirteen minutes and the conversion made it 12-6 to the Vikings.
On the back of some excellent defence Sheffield deservedly scored the next
try through Mark Renshaw-Smith, again capitalising on an error by Widnes to
score out wide. This time Pygott missed the goal but Widnes lead was down to
two.
Sheffield
took the lead before half time after forcing the visitors to drop out on 27
minutes and Winger Bolu Fagborun went over for a try sucessfully converted
by Pygott to give the hosts a 16-12 lead. Despite some poor discipline by
the Eagles just before half time the Vikings couldn’t breach the home
defence and 16-12 was the half time score.
Sheffield then turned the screw in the second half with Kyle Kesik scoring
in the corner after a Vikings fumble in the in goal area on 48 minutes.
Pygott missed and the lead was now eight points. Eight then became twelve on
59minutes with Renshaw-Smith’s second try again out wide and again Pygott
missed from the touchline.
With sixteen minutes to go Widnes came to life and scored two tries in five
minutes to level the scores. Luke Bradburn with the first on the back of two
penalties by Sheffield for interference and the second by substitute Chris
Lunt after the Vikings forced a drop out. Tom Smith converted both and
suddenly the game was level on 70 minutes.
After a penalty for an incorrect play-the-ball Sheffield stormed downfield
and Pygott calmly slammed over the one pointer from thirty meters with five
minutes to go to put Sheffield back in the lead. The defence then held firm
to secure a thrilling win and exact revenge in dramatic style.

Sheffield Eagles Reserves
turned in a good showing on the back of their heavy defeat at Widnes on
Thursday night at Post Office Road. Despite the result Sheffield played some
excellent attacking football and offer plenty of encouragement for the rest
of the season. Going down the hill in the first half, Sheffield conceded an
early penalty from the kick off but but managed to weather the early storm.
Eagles took the lead on nine minutes when Second Row James Morrow barged
over, Gavin Brown hit the post with the conversion. Gareth Williamson and
Matthew Bacon then scored to put Rovers 10-4 ahead after 23 minutes but
Steve Pryce scored the Eagles second try of the game on 27, Brown, who had
an excellent game, again missed with the kick. The Eagles then took the lead
into half time, Eddie Battye with his second try in a week, this time Pygott
missed the goal for a 12-10 half time advantage.
The start of the second half was a disaster for the Eagles with Featherstone
re-gatering from their kick off and then Tom Carr scoring a try two tackles
later. Undaunted Sheffield fought back with Humphreys first of the evening
before Matt Handforth put Rovers back in the lead on 50 minutes.
The game swung back Sheffields way with Humphreys second on 55 before Sean
Hesketh put Rovers ahead again on 62. Featherstone got the crucial next
score on 72 through Mark Falkingham. Despite tiring going up the slope
Sheffield looked to save the game Jamie Cottle's try on 76 miutes and with
the goal made the score 34-30 to Fev.
Rovers however out the game to bed in the last minute with Wing Tom Carr's
second try and Dobek missed the goal for a final score of 38-30 to
Featherstone.
