Frankie Goes to Sheffield

Sheffield Eagles have signed Scotland international Frankie Mariano on a one-year deal.

With Super League, Championship, League 1 and international experience, Mark Aston was keen to bring the utility forward on board as he strengthens the Eagles’ options in the pack.

Mariano’s last club was Doncaster, where he made 23 appearances in two seasons. The ex-Castleford and Wakefield man is looking forward to his return to the second tier.

“It is a step up from where I was at and I wasn’t expecting it to be fair,” he said.

“I didn’t have the best season at Donny due to injury, I put the feelers out there for a move and I had a chat with Tubbs.

“I am looking forward to getting started and meeting up with a few old faces as I’ve played with Jamesy, Thacks and Scott (Wheeldon).

“It should be good to get back into training and ready for the new season.”

With numerous clubs and achievements on his CV, Mariano hopes he can help guide the younger forwards in the squad such as Lewis Taylor, Rory Dixon and Blake Broadbent.

“It (helping young players) is something I will look forward to doing,” he added.

“We have to look after the young lads in the squad and also help bring them through into the first team.”

On the capture of Mariano, Aston added: “We are highly delighted to secure Frankie’s signature,”

“We were missing another forward so it’s great to get this deal across the line.

“He has had some rotten luck with injuries over the past two seasons but he is fresh and raring to go.

“He’s hungry to fight for a place in the team and get back to the great form he has shown in the past.

“He is the type of character we need in this team and I look forward to working with him.”
