Match Report

Sheffield Eagles’ Championship playoffs took a second hit in consecutive weeks as York City Knights triumphed 23-16 at the Olympic Legacy Park.

The Eagles were level pegging with the Knights at 6-6 going into half-time but a sloppy start to the second half saw York capitalise.

Oliver Davies and Ben Blackmore were the standouts for Sheffield, with a try and a brace respectively.

It was a tight first half with neither side taking control of proceedings.

So much so, the first points of the period came half an hour in when Jason Bass touched down. Connor Robinson added the extras.

Sheffield responded with a try on the final tackle of the first stanza. The ball was flung wide to Blackmore, who did enough to squeeze over in the corner. Patch Walker landed a terrific conversion from the sideline.

Unfortunately for Mark Aston’s men, they came out of the blocks lethargically and York weren’t needing a second invitation to pile the pressure on.

Cameron Scott and Marcus Stock both crossed for the visitors, with Robinson kicking a solitary goal.

On 52 minutes, Sheffield scored their second try of the evening thanks to a stereotypical Anthony Thackeray try.

The scrum-half took the line on and dummied his way to a four-pointer. Walker missed the conversion and the match remained a converted try game.

Sheffield had the bit between their teeth and were looking to cut the deficit further. An offload by Jason Crookes fell into the hands of Perry Whiteley who launched a counter attack.

The end of that particular set saw York go over though Will Oakes. Robinson landed the goal.

With just under 15 minutes to go, Thackeray played Oliver Davies over the line and the Eagles weren’t giving in. Walker converted.

Five minutes were on the clock when Robinson put the game beyond doubt with a drop goal, typifying York’s solid game management.

It looks a tough task for the Eagles to get into the top five but they will be hoping to put a dent in the deficit when Dewsbury Rams come to town.
