Match Report

Sheffield Eagles snatched a 16-13 victory at the expense of Dewsbury Rams at the Tetley’s Stadium.

In an ill-tempered affair which saw two red cards and four yellow cards, it was the Eagles who came away with the spoils thanks to two late tries in as many minutes.

Joel Farrell and Ben Blackmore, against their former sides, both touched down as a late Sheffield flurry got them over the line.

Brad Knowles and Samy Kibula were both sent off in the first half, while Farrell saw yellow in the opening 40 minutes.

Adam Ryder and Liam Finn found themselves in the sin-bin in the final quarter and that is when the Eagles struck.

Rory Dixon was drafted into the Eagles’ lineup for his debut while Corey Makelim made his return to the side.

It was the Rams who drew first blood as Paul Sykes kicked a penalty in the eighth minute.

Sheffield were a man light soon after when Farrell was binned for a high shot. Just as he was about to re-enter, more cards were brandished.

Brad Knowles was red carded for punching as he took exception to some niggly play on the floor. Dewsbury forward Chris Annakin was given yellow.

With just over ten minutes remaining, another red card was shown as Farrell brought the ball away from his own line and Kibula hit him high.

Despite all the indiscipline, the scoreline stayed the same till after half-time with Dewsbury holding a slim advantage.

On 48 minutes, the Rams showed some invention and got a reward for it. Chasing a grubber, an offload gave Sykes a free run to the line. The experienced half-back added on the extras for an 8-0 lead.

The hosts then furthered their advantage as they gained good territory from an Eagles knock-on.

Former Eagle Rob Worrincy found room on the right edge and did enough to get over the whitewash. Sykes couldn’t convert.

Sheffield needed a response and they got one with the hour mark approaching. Anthony Thackeray scooted over from a scrum play and Pat Walker was on hand to convert.

Sykes kicked a drop goal on 63 minutes as the lead stretched out to two scores once again.

But the Rams’ indiscipline started to rear its head and this gave Sheffield a chance.

Ryder was next to clobber Farrell with a high tackle and he took a seat in the sin-bin.

Following Ryder to the bin was half-back Finn who held Ryan Millar down and stopped him playing the ball after a break downfield.

The next set saw Sheffield cut the deficit as Farrell streaked over for his sixth try in as many league games. Walker converted.

The Eagles were smelling blood and Blackmore was the man to seal the deal.

A sublime cut-out ball from Thackeray gave the winger a clean run to the line and he put on the acrobatics to touch down.

Walker couldn’t convert but that mattered very little as Sykes’ kickoff didn’t go the ten metres.
