Sheffield Eagles’ Championship Shield campaign got off to a poor start as they lost 68-6 to Leigh Centurions this afternoon.
Ilias Bergal was tormentor-in-chief with four tries to his name while Drew Hutchison crossed for a brace.
Joshua Toole scored Sheffield’s only try of the contest with a great individual effort from a scrum.
Mark Aston made two changes to the side that travelled to Leigh on the final day of the regular season. Ben Blackmore and Jon Magrin both missed out through illness, with Simon Brown and Paddy Burns coming in for the pair.
Bergal opened the scoring after five minutes as he linked up with Matty Dawson-Jones on the wing. Jack Owens couldn’t convert.
Sheffield were looking for a response and they got into great field position thanks to an interception and 70 metre run from James Bentley. However, the attack petered out when Aston’s grubber fell to a Centurion.
The hosts extended their lead with three tries in six minutes from Nathan Mason, Bergal and Hutchison. Owens added six points from the boot.
Bergal completed his hat-trick five minutes from time and debutant Mitch Cox also crossed as Leigh went into the break 34-0 up.
Bergal touched down for the first try of the second period before Sheffield put sustained pressure on the Centurions line.
Toole was held up before Shaun Pick and Matty Fozard both went close, however their efforts came to no avail.
Ricky Bailey stepped his way over the Eagles whitewash on 50 minutes but Mark Aston’s men answered back by breaking their duck.
Toole burst through the Leigh defence from a scrum and the Ireland international showed great pace to go over underneath the sticks. Oscar Thomas converted.
In the final quarter, the Centurions strung four tries together as Liam Hood, Owens, Hutchison and Dawson-Jones all registered scores.
