Match Report: Sheffield Eagles 64-10 Barrow Raiders PDF Print E-mail

Sheffield Eagles went on a 10-try romp as they brushed aside Barrow Raiders to reach their second Cup quarter-final.

The Eagles added a place in the last eight of the Northern Rail to their ticket to meet London Broncos in the Challenge Cup.

Three tries in the opening 10 minutes put the Eagles on the right track.

Fullback Quentin Laulu-Togagae raced in under the posts after only 40 seconds.

Back rower Duane Straugheir touched down Patch Walker’s diagonal kick and Dominic Brambani set up the third try with a break through the middle before sending centre Menzi Yere over.

Former Barrow second rower Michael Knowles picked up a loose ball and scooted through to touch down to push out the lead to 24-0 at half-time.

Barrow held out for 10 minutes following the restart before Yere’s perfectly timed angled run on to Walker’s pass took him to 20 tries for the season.

Matt Garside’s side-step took him under the posts with Tom Armstrong’s pass sending Laulu-Togagae in for his second try. Garside claimed a second and Joe Hirst try brought up 50 points.

Barrow’s consolation was two late tries from Aaron Low with Kurt Haggerty kicking a goal. Andrew Henderson and Hirst finished the scoring with Brambani kicking ten goals.

Eagles booked a place in the Challenge Cup quarter-finals with a win over Halifax the mixed clinical try scoring with strong defence.

Quentin Laulu-Togagae scored two tries as the Eagles made the last eight for the first time since they won the trophy in 1998.

Eagles swept into an early lead with Andrew Henderson passing to Michael Knowles whose offload sent fullback Laulu-Togagae through a gap. Dominic Brambani added goal.

Next the play was switched to right with Brambani and Laulu-Togagae sending in centre Tom Armstrong at the corner.

Steve Tyrer got Fax’s first points with penalty for a high tackle in the final seconds of half to cut Sheffield’s lead to 10-2.

Fax’s problems mounted as a break and short pass by Brambani sent Laulu-Togagae racing 60 metres to touch down under the posts for a spectacular try. Brambani added the goal.

Rob Worrincy gave Fax hope scoring in at the corner. Steve Tyrer’s kick hit the upright but went over.

Eagles settled the game with a break from Alex Szostak sending winger Scott Turner over wide out. Brambani added the goal.

Callum Casey went over for a consolation try but in the final minute Menzie Yere dived on Brambani’s grubber kick and the half-back kicked his fourth goal

A hat-trick of tries from centre Menzie Yere helped the Eagles to a comfortable win over Championship strugglers Dewsbury Rams.

Eagles dominated the early play scoring three tries in the first 20 minutes before the Rams got into the game.

Centre Menzi Yere forcing his way over from Andrew Henderson’s pass and the hooker’s long low pass sent in winger Misi Taulapapa for a touch down.

Dominic Brambani’s 40-20 kick set up the third with prop Mitch Stringer reaching out to finish to the right of the posts. Brambani added two of the goals.

Rams forced their way into the game with Jy-Mel Coleman going over from dummy half and Karl Pryce took an offload to power over. Coleman kicked both goals.

On half-time Yere squeezed in at the corner for a 20-12 lead.

Quentin Laulu-Togagae weaved in from Patch Walker’s pass with Brambani adding the goal.

Aizue kept the Rams in the game punishing hesitation in the Eagles defence for a try with Coleman adding the goal.

James Davey and Yere with his hat-trick try extended the Eagles lead. Brambani finished with four goals from seven attempts.

Eagles started well but then caught a bad case of the jitters before they edged out Keighley Cougars with a try four minutes from time sealing the win.

New captain Mitch Stringer led by example playing the full 80 minutes at prop with Eddie Battye making his seasonal debut on his return from playing in France.

Dominic Brambani dived in from an Alex Szostak pass for the first try and then the half-back provided a cut-out ball for centre Tom Armstrong to finish. Brambani added both goals.

Cougars snapped back with tries from Daley Williams and player coach Paul March. An interception gifted Scott Law the third try and if Scott Leatherbarrow had not missed the conversions Keighley would have been ahead.

Eagles took back the lead a minute before the break with Patch Walker and Quentin Laulu-Togagae putting Scott Turner in at the corned for a 16-12 lead.

Substitute hooker’s James Davey’s pass sent in Armstrong for his second try soon after the restart.

Keighley second rower Olly Pursglove powered his way through for a try converted by Danny Jones to set up a nervous final 10 minutes for the Eagles.

The win was secured with four minutes left when winger Misi Talapapa intercepted a Jones pass to go 90 metres and touchdown under the posts. Brambani finished with four goals from five attempts.

Sheffield Eagles came from 16-0 down at half-time to overcome Kingstone Press Championship rivals Dewsbury 30-16 in the fourth round of the Tetley's Challenge Cup at the Don Valley Stadium.

The Rams were on course to pull off a surprise victory when Matthew Tebb scored a fifth-minute try while former Wakefield winger Dale Morton went over for two in a five-minute spell to put them in command.

But the 1998 Cup winners fought back after the break and clinched their place in Monday's draw thanks to tries from Quentin Laulu-Togagae, Matt Garside, Mitch Stringer, Pat Walker and Misi Taulapapa.

Former Dewsbury half-back Dominic Brambani kicked all five conversions against his old club.
