The Sheffield Eagles overcame torrential rain and a strong Batley side to consolidate their position at the top of The Kingstone Press Championship.

The 14 - 8 victory over one of their closest Championship rivals was The Eagles 13th win in a row.

Michael Knowles crossed for the first try of the night with just three minutes on the clock. The impressive Dom Brambani caused havoc in the Batley defence with a well placed cross field kick and Knowles took full advantage.

The Eagles fell behind in the 18th minute when a well worked Batley move ended with Ben Black crossing the whitewash and Gareth Moore stepping up to add the extras.

The lead didn't last long as excellent work from Patch Walker saw him stroll in under the posts making the kick easy for Brambani. There was just enough time before the interval for the Eagles to launch another attack on the Batley line but Duane Straugheir saw his effort ruled out by the video referee.

They only try of the second half came when a determined Straugheir barged over wide on the right but Brambani was unable to add the extras.

Gareth Moore reduced the arrears for the home side to six points with a penalty in the 68th minute but the Eagles held firm to secure a 14 - 8 victory.

Sheffield Eagles: Togaggae, Turner, Yere, Armstrong, Taulapappa, Walker, Brambani, Green, Henderson, Stringer, Knowles, Straugheir, Hirst. Subs: Davey, Szostak, Garside, Higgins.

Attendance :725
