Burns stays an Eagle
Sheffield Eagles hooker Greg Burns has signed a new one-year deal with the club.
Having had regular game time in the Red and Gold for the past three years, Eagles coach Mark Aston was keen to keep the former Academy product within the squad.
After the club’s successful 2019 season, Burns is delighted to extend his stay and look to help the Eagles progress further.
“I am happy to be staying with the club,” he said.
“Quite a lot of the boys are staying on too while other years we have had a lot of turnover.
“It’s nice to keep the majority of the team and keep this momentum going.”
“2019 was one of the better years we have had as a team.
“We have had quite a bit of success and I played bits and bobs too.
“It may not have been the best for me necessarily for game time but it was a better year for rugby (as a squad).”
With Corey Makelim, Robbie Ward and James Davey all capable of filling in at hooker, Burns is up for the challenge to keep his spot in the match day squad.
“I had quite a bit of competition this year,” Burns reflected.
“With Robbie coming in, who is a class hooker, that little bit of added competition can’t hurt you.
“It makes everyone that little bit better.”
Eagles chief Mark Aston added: “Greg is one of our players that has come through the system we are immensely proud of,”
“He has had his setbacks over the years and found a way to get to where he is, playing professional rugby league and establishing himself as a Championship player.
“We talk about dreams. This year he’s not just managed to play rugby league but to don the hallowed turf of Wembley. It’s a dream come true for him.
“He did have an up-and-down season, we have been frank with him and he knows he has to kick on. We know he will.”
