Super Rob returns to Sheffield

Sheffield Eagles are delighted to announce the signing of Rob Worrincy from Dewsbury Rams.

Worrincy has enjoyed numerous spells in Sheffield, with highlights including National League 2 playoff glory in 2006 and then helping the Eagles reach the inaugural Qualifiers in 2015.

After a couple of seasons at Dewsbury, the winger has signed a one-year deal with the Eagles – bolstering the outside back ranks thanks to unquestionable Championship experience.

“I am really pleased,” he said.

“I have made friends for life here and it’s another opportunity to come and play some football with the Eagles and hopefully have a successful year.

“I have come from Dewsbury where they have had their own troubles.

“Coming back here to Sheffield, with the aspirations they have, is something I couldn’t really pass on.

“I am coming to the twilight of my career but I still have something to offer and I feel here at the Eagles, it’s an opportunity for me to contribute to hopefully another successful season.”

Worrincy did have thoughts of retiring from the sport but good form towards the end of 2019 soon changed his mind, and then Eagles chief Mark Aston came calling.

“I was thinking about putting the boots on the rack and giving it up,” the winger reflected.

“But it came towards the backend of the season and I thought I can go again and that I have the capability to play at this level.

“The minute I heard Tubbs (Aston) was interested, it was a no-brainer from then on.”

As an experienced figure in the squad, Worrincy is hoping to make his mark on the first team while also helping the young outside backs along the way as they learn their trade.

“Anything you can give back to the game is great,” he added.

“There may be players with a bit of inexperience so hopefully I can teach them a few things so they can go on and do big things.

“You’ve got the likes of Ryan Millar, who has come on leaps and bounds as a player since my last spell here and hopefully I can offer some reassurance and guidance to the others too.”

Shortly after Worrincy signed the one-year deal, Eagles GM Liam Claffey commented: “It’s a record fourth time for Rob at the club,”

“When we started to look for a new winger, I made an off-the-cuff comment about Rob to Mark.

“We joked how it would be a club record and something Tubby had never done and I’ll be honest in saying I didn’t think it would happen.

“However, things moved quickly and it’s great he has agreed to come back for another stint at the club.

“He’s a favourite with many of our supporters, an ultimate professional, great experience and because of his previous stints he knows the club well and exactly what is required.

“There is no doubt he will come in and hit the ground running.”

With classic Worrincy interceptions down the flank expected, you won't want to miss the 2020 season at the OLP!
