Eagles progress in 1895 Cup

Sheffield Eagles progressed to the quarter-finals of the AB Sundecks 1895 Cup with a convincing 52-8 victory over a youthful Halifax side at Cougar Park.

Jason Crookes and Ben Blackmore both bagged braces while the Eagles’ young forwards Paddy Burns and Lewis Taylor also crossed the whitewash.

Crookes opened the scoring after five minutes, with Patch Walker missing his first conversion attempt of the night.

Burns soon followed as he crashed over from short range and Walker added the extras.

Anthony Thackeray was next over the try-line with a trademark dummy. Once again, Walker goaled.

Josh Guzdek and Calvin Barker exchanged tries for the Eagles and Fax respectively before Blackmore and Taylor finished the first period with a try apiece.

The visitors went into the sheds 30-4 to the good.

With the final quarter approaching, Sheffield extended their advantage thanks to some silky footwork from Aaron Brown.

Reece Chapman-Smith answered back for the hosts but the Eagles kept forcing the issue and got past the 50-mark as a result.

Ryan Millar, Blackmore and Crookes all touched down inside the final ten minutes as Sheffield booked their place in the next round of the inaugural competition.
