We needed steel and we've got some says Aston
Following the Eagles’ 64-10 win over Swinton Lions on Sunday, Mark Aston was ecstatic with the way the forward pack controlled matters.
2018 was far from a smooth season for the Steel City club, despite securing their Championship status with relative ease.
One of the big issues was the pack being dominated on occasions, however the first game of 2019 saw a complete role reversal.
“They (the Eagles forwards) are tough and we needed some steel in the squad and I think we fetched some,” said Aston.
“Some of the others have jumped on the back of it and we’ve had a great pre-season.
“Everyone has written us off but quietly and confidently, we have got a good team.
“When they all start gelling and the weather gets better, we’re going to play some exciting football and on the back of that we need a strong defence. Today showed we have got that.”
Aston has been aiming to build a good team culture for a number of seasons and with a great mix of youth and experience in this season’s squad, it looks like that has arrived.
“We have got a bit of pride in what we are about and that’s what we’ve spoken about in pre-season,” he added.
“We’ve talked about being honest, respectful and disciplined.
“They’ve taken that out on to the field.
“There’s no point playing this game if you haven’t got the enthusiasm or passion. That was in abundance today.
“I’m lucky because I got to sit down with them individually and they ticked the boxes.
“On the back of that we can get better.
“We may be sat at the top of the league but we have tough games coming up but there’s none we are worrying about.”
