Millar "raring to go" in 2019

Sheffield Eagles winger Ryan Millar has expressed his excitement ahead of the 2019 season as he closes in on full fitness.

Millar suffered torn biceps against Toronto Wolfpack in July which saw him play no further part in the Eagles’ campaign.

However, the ex-Birmingham Bulldogs star has almost made a full recovery which will certainly please Director of Rugby, Mark Aston.

“It (the recovery) has gone a bit slower than I expected to be honest,” Millar said.

“I have seen some good improvements over the last couple of weeks so it is looking up.

“It has been strange for me as it’s my first major injury in my career so it’s taken me a bit of time to get used to it and working out the recovery process.

“It was hard towards the end of the season, watching the boys, when I wanted to be out there but as the weeks have gone on and I am seeing improvements it’s started to get a bit easier.

“have had a couple of months out and now I’m raring to go.

“The squad is looking really good for this year and it’s looking exciting for the season.”

Millar’s goals for 2019 are linked to the injury and hopefully not having to go through a similar situation.

But as his recovery continues, the winger knows there is strong competition for places in this year’s squad – something that was much needed after last term.

“I set a goal last year to play 25 games but because of the injury I didn’t quite make that so that is always there for me this year,” he added.

“Obviously with the injury, a lot of my goals relate to that so just making sure I retain a starting shirt, do my best, stay injury free and enjoy the season.

“Hopefully we’ll be getting a lot more wins and we’ll be able to set some goals that are a lot more positive and exciting than last season.

“That (competition for places) is a great part of us really.

“Competition for places breeds the best in people and last year we had a really thin squad and complacency set in so performances and standards dropped.

“Having a really competitive squad will keep everyone at the top of their game.”
