Eagles announce seven re-signings for 2019

Sheffield Eagles are pleased to announce that seven current players will stay on board for the 2019 Betfred Championship season.

Club captain Matt James will extend his stay in South Yorkshire, while fellow ex-Featherstone players Ben Blackmore and Shaun Pick will also be staying put at the Olympic Legacy Park.

Homegrown duo Greg Burns and Ryan Millar will play a big part in the squad once again as Director of Rugby Mark Aston keeps looking to further develop the players who have come through the Eagles’ system.

Oliver Davies and Corey Makelim, who were new signings for – and during - the 2018 season, will don the Red and Gold once again after impressing in their debut seasons.

Makelim is currently injured with a shoulder problem but will be fine to train during pre-season while Davies has been a regular in Sheffield’s forward pack throughout the year.

Commenting on the re-signings, Eagles General Manager, Liam Claffey, said: “"It’s a high turnover again and it may trouble some but we are retaining a higher number than last year,”

“With the deals we have in place we will have a small turnover and stable squad for the 2020 season.

“Mark (Aston) with assistance from Keith (Senior) and Ged (Corcoran) has worked hard to recruit an exciting squad for next season but also one that will remain as we head into the new stadium in 2020 and form the core of a squad moving forward.”
