Costello scoops Championship Young Player of the Year Award

One of the dual-registation stars of 2018, Matty Costello scooped the Betfred Young Championship Player of the Year at the Betfred Championship & league 1 awards yesterday evening.

The 20 year old made 15 appearances for the Eagles this season and his sensational season was rewarded with his first team debut for St. Helens.

He has gone on to make six appearances for the Saints and will be looking to help them reach the Grand Final and then cement a place in their side next year.

Speaking after receiving the award, Costello said he was "buzzing" at recieving the award.

"I can’t really sum this up in words how I’m feeling right now but just want to say a massive thanks to staff, lads and fans at Sheffield,” he said.

“I now just want to kick on and finish this season on a high with Saints.”

The award is voted for by all 12 Championship coaches and beat off competition from Harry Newman of Featherstone and Brandon Moore of Halifax.

Eagles General Manager Liam Claffey said: "It's great recognition for Matty, he has been outstanding for the Eagles this year in what has been a difficult season."

"Our thanks go to Justin Holbrook, Mike Rush & everyone at St. Helens for their support with dual-registration this season."

"The players that we have recieved this season have been vitally important and are a credit to St. Helens & their excellent youth development system."
