Saints quartet become first dual-registered players in 2018

Sheffield Eagles will have four St Helens players on dual-registration for the first 2018 Betfred Championship match against Dewsbury Rams on Friday.

Jake Spedding, James Bentley, Matty Lees and Jack Ashworth will all be in contention for the clash on Friday 2nd February (7.45pm) at The Tetley’s Stadium.

Spedding had two good stints with Sheffield in 2017, scoring two tries in ten appearances but also impressing in defence alongside Ben Blackmore.

Back-rower Bentley was in fine form when up against the Eagles last season for Bradford Bulls, crossing the whitewash four times in two matches.

Lees and Ashworth are both forwards who will strengthen the pack for what will be a tough test against a Rams side who were on fire last season following the midseason appointment of coach Neil Kelly.

Eagles Chief Operating Officer Liam Claffey said, “It’s great we’ve been able to add these four players to the squad. Spedding was a great addition on loan and then dual-registration for us last year whilst Ashworth, Lees and Bentley will be quality additions.”

“We thank Saints for their continued support in what is and will continue to be a strong positive, relationship. All four players will be in contention for our season opener against Dewsbury on Friday.”

Saints Chief Executive Mike Rush added, “We’re once again thankful to Mark Aston and the Sheffield club for allowing our young players to gain valuable game time in the Championship this season.

“The players will benefit from the experience and we’re looking forward to seeing how they get on this Friday.”

Eagles 2018 Memberships are still on sale ahead of the clubs return to Sheffield on Sunday 4th March against London Broncos.

2018 Memnerships are priced at £175 for Adults, £145 for Concessions, and FREE for Junior 16’s.

These can be bought online at or by calling 0114 398 1998.
