Fozard commits to third season with the Eagles
Sheffield Eagles are thrilled to announce the re-signing of Matty Fozard on a one-year deal.
The St Helens academy product has been a fans favourite during his two seasons in Red and Gold and the Wales international will now be wanting to impress for a third consecutive year.
Scoring 11 tries in 33 appearances last season, it’s more than just statistics that made Fozard stand out in the Eagles squad.
The hooker played in a number of positions, including half-back and loose forward, while the club went through an injury crisis and the 22-year-old didn’t look out of place at any point.
Fozard has also developed a competent kicking game from dummy-half which has been useful for the Eagles’ attacking options.
His great form last season didn’t go under the radar of Wales coach John Kear, who selected Fozard for the Rugby League World Cup in Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea.
He played in his country’s three matches against Papua New Guinea, Fiji and Ireland, who are coached by Eagles boss Mark Aston.
Speaking about his re-signing, Fozard said; “I’m pleased to commit to the Eagles for third season and looking forward to playing in the first match, back in Sheffield.
“It’s huge for the supporters and I am sure they can’t wait to watch us down at the Olympic Legacy Park too.
“I’m still off for a little bit longer after what was a disappointing but tough World Cup campaign with Wales but I’m excited to get back into training and meet the new boys who have joined us.”
Eagles Chief Operating Officer Liam Claffey added, “We are pleased to announce Fozard has committed to the club for another season
“He’s a favourite amongst the supporters and I hope they will continue to get behind us by getting their memberships for the 2018 season as we return to the Steel City.
“Thanks goes to Graeme Taylor too for helping finalise this contract and we look forward to Matty recommencing training shortly.”
