Burns, Millar & James commit to 2018 & 2019

Sheffield Eagles are thrilled to confirm that Greg Burns, Matt James and Ryan Millar have all signed new two-year deals to remain with the club until 2019.

The trio are the first to commit to playing in Red and Gold next year as professional Rugby League returns to Sheffield at the Olympic Legacy Park.

Burns, who came through the Eagles academy system, broke into the first team back in 2015 and has been a fixture in Mark Aston’s plans since then.

The hooker scored two tries in 22 appearances for Sheffield last season, with the majority of his playing time coming from the bench.

With a great turn of pace out of dummy-half and a solid defensive game for someone of such small stature, it’s not a surprise that the 22-year-old has been a big hit with the fans.

Burns said, “I’m really happy to have signed this new deal and committed to my hometown club. I’m looking forward to next season back in Sheffield.”

The Eagles’ re-signing of James is fantastic news for the club ahead of their return to the steel city.

Leading the team to a second consecutive Championship Shield final, the Wales international was one of the more consistent performers in an Eagles shirt during 2017.

The former Featherstone man enters his third year at Sheffield and will be eager to be an integral part in the Eagles’ push up the Championship table.

Speaking of his new deal, James said, “I’m excited to commit my future to the Eagles. I live in Sheffield now, it’s my home and can’t wait to Captain the side down at the Olympic Legacy Park in 2018.”

Another success of the Eagles’ reserve system, full-back/winger Millar extends his stay at the club.

A versatile player who spent most of his 2017 season playing at full back, the 23-year-old is a live-wire with pace to burn.

After coming into the first team picture during the backend of 2015, Millar has become a popular figure and has done a great job stepping into the shoes of Quentin Laulu-Togagae.

Quickly becoming a fans favourite with his support play, everyone will be hoping to see more of the same from Millar in the next two seasons.

Millar said, “I played a lot more games in 2017 at full-back and on the wing. The full-back position was difficult to learn as it was a new position for me I think I improved as the season went on and hopefully I can continue to play a big part next season.”

Director of Rugby Mark Aston added, “I’m thrilled we have tied Burns, James and Millar down to new two year deals. They all played a huge part in 2017 and I am sure they will in 2018 as well.

“It’s great to see the likes of Burns and Millar develop after coming through the system here at the Eagles whilst James is a standout performer who will no doubt lead from the front again.”

Matt James is currently sponsored by Bizspace & George & Brenda Betts, Greg Burns is currently sponsored by Capital Tower and Ryan Millar is currently sponsored by Jim Hawksworth.
